Fact: Marie Curie almost didn’t get her first Nobel prize. She was jointly nominated one year along with Pierre Curie and Antoine Becquerel for their work with radioactivity. Another year, she was deliberately left off the nominee list, and Becquerel and Pierre Curie were nominated. No one’s supposed to know who’s being nominated, not even the nominees, but one of their friends found out about this and was distraught, knowing that Pierre would not want to win the Nobel Prize and Marie be left off, so they found a loophole to use the previous nomination for that year. And that is how she won her first Nobel Prize. So it’s not just likely, it is a cause. Lise Meitner was a woman who was not so lucky, and never got her Nobel Prize. Everyone in her research group was nominated, and she was deliberately left out.
